JAGS article: "Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use by Elderly Persons in U.S. Health Maintenance Organizations, 2000-2001"
A recent issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society addressed the inappropriate medication use among elderly patients, including one study that showed that 28.8% of 157,517 older patients in 10 HMOs received at least one medication contained on the 1997 Beers list. Of particular note, researchers found that 7% of participants received propoxyphene, which researchers reminded, "...is an analgesic medication considered rarely appropriate in the elderly and a drug that has a long history of limited efficacy and potential for toxicity."
