The authors of a December 2005 article appearing in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine concluded from their study that emergency room physicians need more education about the effectiveness of eta-blockers especially in the elderly with acute myocadrdial infarction. They studied 380 patients with MI and of those 270 did not receive beta-blockers in the emercgency department, 141 of those patients had contraindications to use of such agents,
The authors conclude that although beta-blockers have been shown to reduce mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction they remain underused in the emergency department, especially in the elderly.
