Medication News & Update
The drugs Actos and Avandia are use to treat elevated sugar levels in diabetic patients. This is their primary reason for use and benefits to diabetic patients. However, a recent study has shown that they also provide additional benefits to patients with respect to cholesterol levels. Both of these drugs belong to a class know as thiazolidinediones also called "glitazones" for short. or TZDs. Both of the drugs have equal effects of lowering blood sugars but there is a difference in their ability to benefit the patient with respect to cholesterol levels.
Pioglitazone (Actos) improves lipids better than rosiglitazone (Avandia).
Pioglitazone(Actos) seems to be better at lowering triglycerides and increasing HDL(good cholesterol). Pioglitazone LOWERS triglycerides about 9% to 12%... whereas rosiglitazone can INCREASE triglycerides up to 15%.
Pioglitazone also raises HDL about 12% to 19%...compared to 8% to 19% for rosiglitazone.
